Faculty Promotion, Tenure and Sabbatical Processes and Forms
This page provides faculty members with the documents and information needed to navigate key career advancement and professional development processes. These forms and resources are related to faculty promotion, tenure, and sabbatical applications at the University of South Carolina Beaufort.
Post-Tenure Review Schedule and Calendar
From the Office of Academic Affairs, each tenured faculty member, regardless of rank
and including those in departmental administrative positions, will be reviewed every
six years unless, during the previous six-year period, the faculty member is reviewed
and advanced to or retained in a higher position, such as promotion to a higher professorial
rank. Sabbatical leave does not affect post-tenure
review.
The schedule below indicates the ordinary post-tenure review cycle. In accordance with the USCB Faculty Manual, post-tenure review may be waived for any faculty member who notifies the Department Chair, in writing, of retirement within three years of the next scheduled review. The post-tenure review period may be extended with written approval, in accordance with ACAF 1.31 Extension of Faculty Tenure-Track Probationary Period and Scheduled Post-Tenure Review. Please note this document is a guide only. The USCB Faculty Manual is the final authority on post-tenure review policies and procedures; see also policy .
Sabbatical Leave
The purpose of a sabbatical leave is to provide a period of time for creative and
scholarly endeavors, that is of value to the faculty and contributes to their work
with the University. A leave with pay (sabbatical) is a privilege which may be granted
to an individual who has demonstrated, preferably by published or otherwise recognized
work, substantial ability in scholarship, research and training, or other creative
work.
One sabbatical leave will be granted each academic year, with a preference for the
leave occurring in the Spring term. Requests for the fall may be considered, depending
on project and Department Chair ability to cover courseload. Faculty shall be paid
at100% of base salary for the duration of the academic term in which sabbatical has
been granted.
All Tenured Associate and Full Professors who meet all of the following criteria are
eligible for consideration:
- employed at USCB for at least six years prior to application;
- tenured;
- satisfactory annual reviews for the past six years;
Note: Applicants at current rank for 6 or more years, must also have a satisfactory post-tenure review in all areas.
Each academic year, the Office of Academic Affairs will solicit applications for sabbatical
leave.
Applications are expected to be made available in late fall and must be submitted
on or about March 1. Applications will be reviewed by the Sabbatical Review Committee
consisting of 3 tenured faculty members. Applications will be reviewed once the application
period has closed and conclude on or before April 15. The committee will provide a
ranked recommendation with rationale to the Provost who will make the final decision
on or about May 1.
Applications with these criteria will receive priority points:
- Applicant has not been previous recipient of a sabbatical leave at USCB.
- Project ties directly to university mission, academic master plan, or strategic plan.
